More-than-Human music: an introduction to the interspecies trio vegetable.machine.animal

ABSTRACT
This presentation will explore some of the development ideas and sound-thinking behind vegetable.machine.animal(VMA), a project facilitated by Kieran Monaghan—kit drummer, percussionist of found sounds, and the 2024 Sound-Artist-in-Residence at Te Kōkī/New Zealand School of Music.
The project, vegetable.machine.animal, investigates intersections between spontaneous performance, electronic music, and science-informed inter-species collaboration. Establishing VMA in early 2023 the project developed rapidly with the recent release of an album, a book of writings, two international[2024 & 2025] and one national tour[2025], three exhibitions and three residences.
