◎演講者：Lei X. Ouyang (歐陽小莉) is Associate Professor of Music at Swarthmore College outside of Philadelphia. Her scholarly interests are in music, culture, and performance in East Asia (primarily China, Taiwan, and Japan) and Asian America. Her research examines issues of memory, politics, social identities, racism, and social justice. Presentation based on collaboration with Fanyi (Faye) Ma (馬凡軼).

How are Asian and Asian American students and faculty at historically white liberal arts college campuses engaged in the work of anti-racism and de-colonization through performance? This presentation takes a newly established collegiate Chinese music ensemble, its faculty co-directors, and student members in focus to discuss music making as a site for cultural production and community. This ethnographic study considers how the ensemble functions as a new space on campus for Asian and Asian American students to create community with one another through studying and performing Chinese music. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s music departments across North American institutions of higher education attempted to dismantle Euro-centric canons with the addition of new performance ensembles as part of liberal multiculturalist initiatives. How then, may we understand ensembles of Asian and Asian American origins including Chinese Music and Taiko emerging in the 2000s and within systems of Neoliberal Multiculturalism as discussed by Jodi Melamed (2011) and others? In her celebrated work examining Taiko in Asian America Deborah Wong insists on connecting multicultural ideologies because, “Asian American culturemaking takes place within these terms, not despite them” (2019: 15). Through exploring moments of musicking on college campuses this ethnographic study seeks to offer one example of how we can understand processes of representation, racialization, spectatorship, and the contemporary impacts of orientalism and yellow peril facing Asian and Asian American college students today.
