Courses Overview
For general regulations on enrollment and course selection, please refer to related regulations established by the university. The following are requirements for students in the three divisions Theory Division, Music Industry Division, and Musical Instruments Division of the Institute approved by the first course meeting in the second semester of the 2017 academic year.
(1) For general registration and course selection regulations, the Institute follows relevant regulations of the university.
(2) The minimum required graduation credits of the Institute are 42, including 36 credits on professional courses and 6 credits on the Master’s thesis. The duration time of Study is 2 to 4 years
Professional courses include:
a. 3 general required courses (9 credits): Research Methods and Thesis Writing, Ethnomusicology: Theory and Practice, and Music Culture of the World;
b. 1 division-required course (3 credits): Field Study and Analysis in Music (for Theory Division), Seminar of Music Industry (for Music Industry Division), and The Physics of Music (for Musical Instruments Division);
c. 8 elective courses.
(3) Credits taken by students of the Institute are not supposed to exceed 13 credits a semester. Course overload must be approved by the director of the Institute, and its credits would not be counted as part of the minimum required graduation credits.
(4) To allow students to make up for lacking courses from the undergraduate program, the Institute offers a total of 3 advanced placement classes (0 credit). Students from all divisions who previously took classes on Ethnomusicology, Introduction to Ethnomusicology, or Anthropology of Music (with grades of 70 or higher) can waive one course requirement (Theory Division must take Introduction to Ethnomusicology and Anthropology of Music. Music Industry Division students must take one of the two aforementioned classes.) Classes offered by a bachelor program or a bachelor program of extension education or the in-service master’s program run by the Institute may be accepted with permission from the director of the Institute, each as half of an advanced placement class (except for courses of in-service education program of which each counts one advanced placement class). “On-campus and Off-campus Seminars” are prerequisites for students of all divisions. After completing 36 hours of seminar coursework, the students must submit a report with over 3000 characters in length.
(5) Students of the Institute must publish or present at least 1 paper at an on-campus or off-campus academic conference or academic journal to be eligible for the oral part of the Master’s thesis.
(6) Freshmen who are not international students and who have passed the second entrance examination of the Institute are required to participate in and pass the summer English intensive class held by the university. Please refer to the Chinese version of this regulation if you are not international students.
(7) Students of the Institute who are not international students are required to take second foreign language courses held by TNNUA General Education Center. Please refer to the Chinese version of this regulation if you are not international students.
(8) “Time Reserved for the Institute” is required for students as time for lectures or meetings. First and second year students must not take classes which coincide with this time. If students are absent from activities held by the Institute during this time, then they should accept an increase on hours for On-campus and off-campus seminars. One absence counts for two hours.
(9) Students of the Institute must join at least one orchestra under the Research Center for Asia-Pacific Music for at least one year to be eligible for the oral defense of the Master’s thesis.
(10) Master’s thesis of students of the Institute must be written according to the form predetermined by the Institute.
【 The following is for students admitted in the 2021 academic year 】
(1) The minimum required graduation credits of the Institute are 33, including 27 credits on professional courses and 6 credits on the Master’s thesis.
Professional courses include:
a. 3 general required courses (9 credits): Research Methods and Thesis Writing, Ethnomusicology: Theory and Practice, and Music Culture of the World;
b. 1 division-required course (3 credits): Field Study and Analysis in Music (for Theory Division), Seminar of Music Industry (for Music Industry Division), and The Physics of Music (for Musical Instruments Division);
c. 5 elective courses.

(3) Freshmen who are not international students and who have passed the second entrance examination of the Institute are required to participate in and pass the summer English intensive class held by the university. Please refer to the Chinese version of this rule if you are not international students.
(4) “On-campus and Off-campus Seminars” are prerequisites for students of all divisions. Students must attend one On-campus and one Off-campus seminar and there is no time limit.
(5) “Time Reserved for the Institute” is required for students as time for lectures or meetings. First and second year students must not take classes which coincide with this time.
(6) Students of the Institute must attend courses held by Center for Taiwan Academic Research Ethics Education and pass its final exam to attain the certificate, so they can be eligible for the Master’s degree exam.
(7) Students of the Institute must publish or present at least 1 paper at an on-campus or off-campus academic conference or academic journal to be eligible for the oral part of the Master’s thesis. Music Industry Division students have the option of curating a presentation instead. Musical Instruments Division students have the option of exhibiting their self-made instruments instead.
(8) Master’s thesis of students of the Institute must be written according to the form predetermined by the Institute.
